Joe Whelan
General Manager


Joe Whelan joined the Waste Management of Hawaii team in November 2007 when he transferred from Waste Management of Pennsylvania. Bringing more than 20 years of experience in the waste industry, Joe is responsible for the day-to-day operations at Waimanalo Gulch Landfill as the district manager.

Originally from Cumberland, Maryland, Joe holds a bachelor's degree in biological sciences from the University of Maryland and is a SWANA Certified Manager of Landfill Operations and Certified Hazardous Material Manager since 1994.

Jesse Frey

Jesse Frey
Market Area Engineer


Jesse Frey has been with Waste Management of Hawaii since November 2007 where he provides engineering and technical assistance for Kekaha, West Hawaii and Waimanalo Gulch landfills.

Before joining Waste Management of Hawaii, Jesse was an engineering consultant for Earth Tech, consulting exclusively at Waimanalo Gulch Landfill as the lead engineer for the past three years. Jesse graduated from Gonzaga University with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering.

Russell Nanod

Russell Nanod
Community Affairs Manager

Russell joined the Waste Management team in July 2005 and is responsible for community outreach for the Hawaii market area. He works with community leaders and government officials to develop programs to increase recycling and supports community groups with outreach programs, charitable giving and partnerships.

Prior to joining the Waste Management team, Russell served as community relations manager for the Hawaii Medical Service Association and also served as vice president for Bank of America Hawaii.



Natalie Corella

Natalie Corella
Operations Specialist

Natalie Corella became a part of the Waste Management Hawaii's team in March 2005 as the Operations Specialist and is responsible for office administration, accounting and customer service. Originally from Orange County, California, she majored in Computer Science and Accounting at Chapman University.

Seeking a more peaceful and simple lifestyle, Natalie moved to Hawaii in November 2004. In her spare time, Natalie continues to operate a salsa business using recipes that have been in her family for more than 125 years. 14 years ago, Natalie embarked on a new journey as a businesswoman and now has operations in Key West Florida, San Clemente California and Hawaii. Otherwise, Natalie loves to fish, surf, cooking and listening to a wide array of music.


Justin Lottig

Justin Lottig
Market Area Environmental Protection Manager


As market area environmental protection manager of Waste Management of Hawaii, Lottig is responsible for proactively managing and ensuring that all Waste Management landfills are meeting state and national compliance standards. In addition, he regularly monitors landfill systems including daily checks of the landfill gas systems, leachate system and the appearance of the active working face.

Originally from Somerset County in southwestern Pennsylvania, he holds a Bachelor’s of Science in geosciences with a focus on hydrogeology and is also affiliated with the Hawaii Association of Environmental Professionals.

Kekaha Landfill Key Staff

Jeffrey Kaohi
District Manager - Kekaha Landfill, Kauai

Jeff joined Kekaha Landfill soon after it opened in September 1993. As a District Manager, he is responsible for the operations at the landfill, as well as being actively involved with the Kekaha community. His management experience includes three years of service in the U.S. Army as an air defense officer, and 13 years employed at the Pacific Missile Range Facility as a logistics supervisor, and later hazardous waste and safety manager.

Some of Jeff's accomplishments include graduating from Eastern Washington State College with a B.S. in Industrial Technology (Design) and attaining various safety and environmental certifications. He currently is a member of the Kauai Chamber of Commerce, the Department of Health Solid Waste Task Force, and the Kauai County Solid Waste Advisory Committee that is working on the County's Integrated Solid Waste Plan.

Jeff lives on Kauai with his wife and their four dogs.



Mary Mulhall
Operations Specialist - Kekaha Landfill, Kauai

Mary Mulhall became part of the Waste Managementof Hawaii team in May 2005, as operations specialist for the Kekaha Landfill. Originally from San Francisco, her background encompasses aspects of office management and accounting. Mary's interest in environmental science serves well in her work at Waste Management.

In her free time, Mary enjoys taking part in a variety of volunteer activities, loves to hike, and enjoys going to the beach.
