Waste Management of Hawaii Challenges State Legislators to "Step Out to Fight Diabetes" At Annual American Diabetes Association Walk
Kapolei, Hawaii, February 28, 2008 – Waste Management and Mayor Mufi Hannemann are teaming up to raise money for the American Diabetes Association, Hawaii (ADA).
Waste Management of Hawaii will donate $500 to ADA on behalf of Mayor Hannemann, honorary chairman of the walk, for each invited elected official from the Waianae Coast who signs up and completes the upcoming “Step Out to Fight Diabetes” Walk on March 15, 2008. The Waimanalo Gulch Landfill operator sent letters to elected officials who represent the landfill’s neighboring Leeward communities where diabetes is prevalent to help generate more awareness of the problem.
“Every 21 seconds, there is a new case of diabetes diagnosed,” said Majken Mechling, executive director of American Diabetes Association, Hawaii. “The walk is our premier fund-raising event of the year and by participating, our legislators are doing their part to touch the lives of the 20.8 million children and adults who live with type 1 and type 2 diabetes every day.”
“Waste Management values it’s community partnerships and looks forward to a second year of supporting the American Diabetes Association,” said Joe Whelan, Waste Management of Hawaii district manager. “We are also thankful for Mayor Mufi Hannemann’s participation, as well as the consideration of other elected officials who choose to participate and help give back to our local community.”
