Waianae, Hawaii, April 3, 2008 – “Keep the Hawaiian Islands Beautiful: Give a Day to Your Community” is the theme of a 90-day nationwide campaign kicked off in March throughout the U.S. to produce a cleaner, greener America.
Coordinated statewide by the affiliates of Keep America Beautiful in Hawaii, the campaign will involve dozens of groups who will sponsor special community work days. Volunteers will to do everything from cleaning up reefs, beaches, state and county parks and highway right-of-ways, to planting native plants and trees, removing graffiti and conducting tire and paint amnesty events.
Last year the statewide cleanup program involved nearly 4,000 volunteers who donated more than 12,000 hours of work time to collect more than 100,000 pounds of litter and debris, 75 tons of green waste, 24,000 tires and more than 99,500 pounds of electronic gear for recycling. In addition, nearly 900 trees were planted across the state.
