WASTE MANAGEMENT OF HAWAII AWARDS $10,000 TO LOCAL KEEP AMERICA BEAUTIFUL AFFILIATES TO SUPPORT GREAT HAWAII CLEANUP ON APRIL 26

Oahu and Maui Volunteers Urgently Needed for Island-Wide Cleanups

Kapolei, Hawaii, April 21, 2008 – Nani ‘O Waianae and Community Work Day Program, Oahu and Maui’s Keep America Beautiful affiliates respectively, will team up with Waste Management on Saturday, April 26, one week after Earth Day, for the statewide Great Hawaii Cleanup. Waste Management recently donated $5,000 to each organization in support of their efforts to preserve our aina’s natural resources.

“We are delighted about this new partnership with Waste Management and hope other companies will soon follow in their footsteps to help keep our aina beautiful for the future generations to enjoy,” said Rhiannon Chandler, program director of Community Work Day Program. “We are in need of community support for our April 26 Great Hawaii Cleanup events throughout Maui and Oahu, and encourage everyone to sign up.”

Waste Management recently pledged $5,000 to Community Work Day Program to help with their efforts on Maui for the Great Hawaii Cleanup. In addition, Waste Management recently honored Nani ‘O Waianae as a recipient of its Target Grant Awards. Nani ‘O Waianae was one of only 21 organizations that received a $5,000 grant from Waste Management. Last year, Mayor Mufi Hannemann awarded Nani ‘O Waianae with the Good Neighborhood Everyday Environmental Team Leadership Award on behalf of the City & County of Honolulu.

“At Waste Management of Hawaii, one of our top priorities is preserving the beauty of our island community, so we always do what we can to support our neighbors. Our partnerships with Nani ‘O Waianae and Community Work Day Program are beneficial for all parties involved, especially residents,” said Joe Whelan, general manager of Waste Management of Hawaii. “As the industry leader in waste and environmental services, we are glad to support the Great Hawaii Cleanup and hope that kamaaina lend a helping hand this month.”

Waste Management of Hawaii has operated Waimanalo Gulch Landfill as an integral part of the City & County of Honolulu’s solid waste management infrastructure for more than 20 years. The facility is permitted to handle municipal solid waste, which is heavily regulated, monitored and controlled by local, state and federal government agencies. The facility's staff includes 31 full-time employees, many of whom are active in the local community.
