WASTE MANAGEMENT BIDS FOND ALOHA TO PAUL BURNS
Transition Welcomes Long Time Landfill Expert Jappert
Kapolei, Hawaii - July 23, 2007 - Waste Management announced today that Paul
Burns, general manager for Waste Management of Hawaii, will be leaving at
the end of July, with his wife and son, to care for his ailing father in
Maine. He has accepted a position with Waste Management's subsidiary
Wheelabrator, located close to his father.
"It was a difficult decision for me to leave Hawaii, but I have to be there
for my dad and my family right now," said Burns. "I'm confident that Dave
Jappert, who has more than 20 years experience in the industry, is the best
choice to take charge at Waimanalo Gulch and our other landfill operations
statewide. We'll be working very closely over the next month transitioning
operations to ensure a smooth changeover."
Burns will be replaced by Dave Jappert, who has worked on highly complex
projects involving waste disposal, transfer, collection and recycling
throughout the West, including Arizona, California and Oregon.
Jappert comes to Hawaii from his position as the director of operations for
Waste Management's Los Angeles Market Area where he was responsible for
three collection companies, three landfills and one transfer station serving
the City and County of Los Angeles. In addition, the Solid Waste Association
of North America (SWANA) has certified Jappert for manager of landfill
operations and of integrated waste management systems. He will reside in Ewa
Beach with his wife and 8-year-old child.
"Dave Jappert has a very strong technical background - one of the strongest
in the industry," said Larry Metter, Vice President of the Los Angeles
Market Area. "Not only is he a great operator, he's worked with communities
and elected officials throughout the West. He's a great choice for Hawaii."
