Waste Management of Hawaii is Platinum Sponsor for Betty Crocker Landscape Awards for Fourth Consecutive Year

Local Landscapers and Gardeners Recognized at Event

HONOLULU, HI - July 21, 2009 - Waste Management of Hawaii donated $500 to Scenic Hawaii as a platinum sponsor of the Scenic Hawaii 2009 Betty Crocker Landscape Awards that celebrate those who help make our state more beautiful. Named after a founding member of Scenic Hawaii that dedicated more than 30 years to preserve and protect the state's beauty and scenic views, the awards recognize individuals and organizations working to keep Hawaii picturesque through landscaping and gardening.

"We are so grateful for Waste Management's continued support every year for Scenic Hawaii and its mission," said Cis Crocker, Betty Crocker's daughter. "Organizations such as Waste Management have a responsibility to our aina and we appreciate their vision in helping to keep Hawaii beautiful."

In addition, Waste Management's own Russell Nanod, community affairs manager, presented the Legacy Award, the program's highest honor, at the gala dinner to the Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden. Two organizations were also named Volunteer of the Year - the Aikahi Playground Park Volunteers and The Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Garden - Propagation Group. In addition, eight Awards of Excellence were awarded at the dinner including:

  • Private Gardens - Flores Garden; Matthews Garden
  • Community Gardens - Project Hookipa Beach Park; Restoration Project at Washington Place
  • Professional - Hawaiian, Japanese and Chinese Cultural Gardens, Central Concourse, Honolulu International Airport; The Kam's Residence Living Wall
  • Xeriscape - Cactus Garden, Kapiolani Community College; Kapalama Main Gate Garden, Kamehameha Schools
Built on a passion for protecting Hawaii's natural beauty, Scenic Hawaii works to preserve historic, cultural and natural resources in conjunction with local community and government efforts. Waste Management's donation supports Scenic Hawaii's overall mission to educate residents about preserving and enhancing Hawaii's stunning natural landscape.

Waste Management of Hawaii operates Waimanalo Gulch, West Hawaii and Kekaha Landfills as an integral part of each county's solid waste management infrastructure. The facilities handle municipal solid waste, which is heavily regulated, monitored and controlled by local, state and federal government agencies. In addition to its community contributions and significant volunteer efforts, Waste Management of Hawaii provides a benefit to the local economy of more than $2.9 million annually.
