Waste Management of Hawaii Selected as Finalist in PBN Business Leadership Hawaii Awards

Kapolei, HI, October 15, 2007 – Waste Management of Hawaii proudly announced today its selection as a finalist in the Division II category of Pacific Business News’ Business Leadership Hawaii Awards. The awards recognize local businesses that demonstrate strong leadership within the community and within their company.

“It is such an honor to be recognized by our peers for our active participation in the community,” said Dave Jappert, general manager of Waste Management of Hawaii. “Waste Management of Hawaii is committed to supporting strong partnerships with local schools, community and environmental groups, and local businesses.”

Over the past two years, Waste Management has reaffirmed its strong commitment to the Hawaii landfills it operates by taking immediate and visible action – listening to community concerns and, more importantly, following up with immediate changes and improvements to its operations. The company has consistently demonstrated its concern for public safety and the community’s well being, especially for the neighborhoods surrounding the Waimanalo Gulch Landfill on Oahu’s Leeward Coast, by taking the initiative of going out into the community to educate and listen to and address the needs and concerns of its citizens.

In addition, Waste Management of Hawaii prides itself on being a strong community partner by supporting a variety of non-profit and community organizations and local schools. The company conducts free educational site tours for various community members - students, teachers, elected officials, neighborhood board members, and all interested community members. Since August 2005, Waste Management of Hawaii has conducted landfill tours for 2,785 Hawaii residents; 876 in this year alone. It has also conducted numerous in-school presentations to educate students about how solid waste is handled and the strict measures taken to help protect the environment.

Some of the recent contributions and sponsorships Waste Management of Hawaii has given include: The Hawaii Foodbank, The Food Basket, Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, The Nature Conservancy, Nani 'O Waianae (Keep America Beautiful affiliate), American Diabetes Association Walk, Kapolei City Lights, Hawaii Island United Way, Parker Schools, Kekaha Elementary School, West Hawaii Exploration Academy, Kilohana Canoe Club, Get the Drift and Bag It Clean-Up, Kapolei Rotary’s Taste of Kapolei, U.S. VETS Hawaii and more.

The winners will be announced at the awards dinner on Thurs., Nov. 8, at 5:30 p.m. in the Coral Ballroom of the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

Waste Management of Hawaii operates Waimanalo Gulch, West Hawaii and Kekaha Landfills as an integral part of each county’s solid waste management infrastructure. The facilities handle municipal solid waste, which is heavily regulated, monitored and controlled by local, state and federal government agencies. In addition to its community contributions and significant volunteer efforts, Waste Management of Hawaii provides a benefit to the local economy of more than $2.9 million annually.
