Total Trash Out Kicks-Off in Hawaii Schools
Event Teaches Kids about Recycling and Raises Money for Local Schools
Honolulu, Hawaii - November 7, 2005 - Start collecting aluminum cans now! Waste Management's Total Trash Out recycling contest is set to kick-off in Hawaii elementary and middle schools on March 1, 2006
Total Trash Out is a four-week plastic bottle and aluminum can recycling contest between Oahu elementary and middle schools, that helps schools raise money by giving all revenue derived from the program directly to each participating school. The program also teaches children about the importance of recycling and the value of a clean environment.
"We're excited to bring Total Trash Out to Oahu. Kids have fun collecting aluminum cans and plastic bottles, learning about the benefits of recycling and earning money for their school - the whole community benefits," said Paul Burns, Vice President and General Manager for Waste Management of Hawaii.
Students, teachers, parents and the public can participate in Total Trash Out by collecting cans and taking them to their participating school from March 1, 2006 through March 31, 2006. For those schools taking part in the program, Waste Management is working with other organizations to provide recycling bins and pickup service.
"Waste Management is pleased to be able to help raise funds for our local schools, while also teaching the value of conserving our natural resources," continued Burns.
Two schools will be recognized as grand-prize winners: the school that collects and redeems the most aluminum cans and plastic bottles overall and the school that collects the most per student. In addition to receiving the full Hawaii redemption value for their cans and bottles, the top three schools will receive cash prizes.
