Waste Management of Hawaii Encourages Kama'aina to "Think Green" This Holiday Season
Kapolei, Hawaii, December 27, 2007 – Did you know that Americans throw away 25 percent more trash during the holiday season? Leftover turkey, piles of wrapping paper and mountains of packaging dramatically add to disposal volumes during November and December. There are simple ways to be more environmentally friendly this holiday season.
Waste Management of Hawaii encourages everyone to “Think Green” by remembering the three R’s – reduce, reuse and recycle – with these simple tips:
- Reduce:
- Instead of using disposable plastic or paper shopping bags, substitute them with durable and reusable totes.
- Turn off holiday lights during the late night and daytime hours in order to reduce energy use.
- Reuse:
- Save and reuse holiday wrapping paper, ribbons gift bags and decorations.
- Buy a potted tree and plant it after the holidays for an "evergreen" tree.
- Recycle:
- Wrapping paper, holiday cards and cardboard boxes can all be recycled.
- If you have a Christmas tree, garland or wreath, be sure to recycle them when the holidays are over.
With a little imagination and commitment, we can use this holiday season to create new traditions that help preserve the environment, not only for our ohana, but also for future generations.
Waste Management of Hawaii operates Waimanalo Gulch, West Hawaii and Kekaha Landfills as an integral part of each county’s solid waste management infrastructure. The facilities handle municipal solid waste, which is heavily regulated, monitored and controlled by local, state and federal government agencies. In addition to its community contributions and significant volunteer efforts, Waste Management of Hawaii provides a benefit to the local economy of more than $2.9 million annually.
